Follow German word order without losing the story
A German sentence sometimes asks you to hold an idea in mind until the verb arrives. Compound nouns and reported speech add another layer. Reading a short story gives you room to pause, find the sentence structure, and reread with the meaning in view.

A reading routine to try
On your first pass, find the main verb and the person or thing doing the action. In a longer sentence, mark where a subordinate clause begins and look toward its end for the verb. If a compound noun stops you, use the final noun as a starting point and check how the earlier parts narrow its meaning.
